He stole all hearts away Away... Album: You Are The Quarry Year: 2004 Music: Alain Whyte The Youngest Was The Most Loved The youngest was the most loved The youngest was the shielded We kept him from the world's glare And he turned into a killer Retroussé nose Turned up and mischievous Forget-me-not eyes that cried if we ever left his side There is no such thing in life as normal There is no such thing in life as normal The youngest was the most loved The youngest was the cherub A small boy from a poor house Who turned into a killer A blush, it rose If he had to say ‘hello’ A lop-sided grin Strained to keep the shyness in There is no such thing in life as normal There is no such thing in life as normal The youngest was the most loved The youngest was the cherub The luck was all before him With a lovely wife beside him The youngest was the most loved The youngest was the cherub We kept him from the world's glare And he turned into a killer There is no such thing in life as normal There is no such thing in life as normal Unmistakable sirenes of ambulances lost in Rome traffic noise open this song as a sonic background. Do you really think She'll pull through? Do you really think She'll pull through? Girlfriend in a coma, I know I know - it's serious Bye, bye, ... baby, goodbye There were times when I could have 'strangled' her (But you know I would hate anything To happen to her) WOULD YOU PLEASE LET ME SEE HER? Do you really think She'll pull through? Do you really think She'll pull through? Let me whisper my last goodbyes I know - IT'S SERIOUS Album: Strangeways, Here We Come Year: 1987 Music: Johnny Marr You Have Killed Me Pasolini is me 'Accattone' you'll be I entered nothing and nothing entered me 'Til you came with the key And you did your best but As I live and breathe You have killed me You have killed me Yes I walk around somehow But you have killed me You have killed me Piazza Cavour, what's my life for? Visconti is me Magnani you'll never be I entered nothing and nothing entered me 'Til you came with the key And you did your best but As I live and breathe You have killed me You have killed me Yes, I walk around somehow But you have killed me You have killed me Who am I that I come to be here...? As I live and breathe You have killed me You have killed me Yes I walk around somehow But you have killed me You have killed me And there is no point saying this again There is no point saying this again But I forgive you, I forgive you Always I do forgive you Pasolini: Pier Paolo Pasolini, poet, director, writer, the soul of the 20th century Italian art. Accattone: Accattone was the title of the first movie by Pier Paolo Pasolini in 1961. Literally 'Accattone' means a beggar, mendicant. In Rome it also means a poor man, a man with no talent. Here Morrissey implies that the person he is speaking to will be "his first"... Piazza Cavour: Cavour Square in Prati, Rome. Just behind the Palace of Justice and very near to Lungotevere. Rumoured to be a "gay cruising area"... Visconti: Luchino Visconti, famous Italian director, author of masterworks like Ossessione, Rocco e i suoi fratelli, Morte a Venezia, Il Gattopardo. He also worked a lot with Anna Magnani as she was his favourite actress. An episode directed by Visconti of the movie "Siamo Donne" was about Anna Magnani's everyday life. Magnani: Anna Magnani, the greatest Italian actress ever. On promoting the new album in TV shows and live in concert, Morrissey often changed the second verse to "Fellini I'll be", a clear reference to Federico Fellini one of the greatest Italian director ever. Album: Ringleader of the Tormentors Year: 2006 Music: Jesse Tobias To Me You Are A Work Of Art I live the life I feel the pain To sing this song To tell the tale I wish I'd never even heard the song I see the world It makes me puke But then I look at you and know That somewhere there’s a someone who can soothe me To me you are a work of art And I would give you my heart That’s if I had one I see the world It makes me puke But then I look at you and know That somewhere there’s a someone who can soothe me To me you are a work of art And I would give you my heart That’s if I had one, had one To me you are a work of art And I would give you my heart That’s if I had one Album: Ringleader Of The Tormentors Year: 2006 Music: Jesse Tobias I Will See You In Far Off Places Nobody knows what human life is. Why we come, why we go. So why then do I know I will see you, I will see you in far off places? The heart knows why I grieve And yes one day I will close my eyes forever But I will see you I will see you in far off places. It’s so easy for us to sit together But it’s so hard for our hearts to combine And why? And why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Destiny for some is to save lives But destiny for some is to end lives But there is no end And I will see you in far off places. If your god bestows protection upon you And if the USA doesn’t bomb you I believe I will see you somewhere safe Looking to the camera, messing around And pulling faces. An emphatic Eastern opening track for Ringleader Of The Tormentors. The lyrics reveal some suspicions about the character whom Morrissey is referring to (certainly a Muslim, maybe even good old Bin Laden). Morrissey admits he finds impossible for them to live together in peace, but he promises they will meet again in a very far off place, in time and space or, secretly, in a safe place and in the shelter of American bombs to be filmed together in front of a camera, "messing around and pulling faces". What else to say? A nice essence (or a mix) of irony, mysticism, struggle of civilizations and religions, deep considerations on Life, etc. Album: Ringleader Of The Tormentors Year: 2006 Music: Jesse Tobias Let Me Kiss You There's a place in the sun for anyone Who has the will To chase one and I think I've found mine Yes, I do believe I have found mine So, close your eyes And think of someone you physically admire And let me kiss you, oh Let me kiss you, oh I zig-zagged all over America And I cannot find a safety haven Say, would you let me cry on your shoulder I've heard that you'll try anything twice Close your eyes And think of someone you physically admire And let me kiss you, oh Let me kiss you, oh But then you open your eyes And you see someone that you physically despise But my heart is open My heart is open to you I Just Want To See The Boy Happy Lord, these words I beg of you As I kneel down at my bed Because soon I will be dead Let’s face it soon I will be dead And I just want to I want to see the boy happy With some hope in his pale eyes Is that too much to ask? Before I die I have one final dream For my own life I don’t care anything Lord these words I beg of you As I kneel down at my bed Let’s face it soon I will be dead And I just want to I want to see the boy happy With his arms around his first love Is that too much to ask? Before I die I have one final dream For my own life I don’t care anything And I just want to I want to see this boy happy Why is this such a bad thing? Album: Ringleader Of The Tormentors Year: 2006 Music: Jesse Tobias Ganglord Ganglord, the police are Kicking their way into my house And haunting me, taunting me Wanting me to break their laws Ganglord, the police are Kicking their way into my house And haunting me, taunting me Wanting me to break their laws And I'm turning to you, Oh, to save me... And I'm turning to you, Oh, to save me... Ganglord, the police are Grinding me into the ground The headless pack are back Small boy jokes and loaded guns Ganglord, the police are Grinding me into the ground The headless pack are back Small boy jokes and loaded guns And I'm turning to you, to save me... And I'm turning to you, Oh, to save me! Save me... To save me, save me, to save me! Gandlord, there's a clock on the wall Making fun of us all Ganglord, there's a clock on the wall And it makes a joke of us all And I'm turning to you, to save me... And I'm turning to you, to save me, save me... To save me, save me, to save me! Ganglord, remember! The police can always be bribed... Ganglord, remember! The police can always be bribed... They say 'to protect and to serve' But what they really want to say is: "Get back to the ghetto! The ghetto! Get yourself back to the ghetto! The ghetto! The ghetto! Get yourself back to the ghetto! The ghetto! The ghetto!" At Last I Am Born At last I am born Historians note I am finally born I once used to chase affection withdrawn But now I just sit back and yawn Because I am born, born, born "Look at me now From difficult child to spectral hand to Claude Brasseur Oh blah blah blah..." At last I am born Vulgarians know I am finally born I once thought that time accentuates despair But now I don’t actually care Because I am born, born, born "Look at me now From difficult child To spectral hand to Claude Brasseur Oh blah blah blah..." At last I am born At last I am born Living the one true free life born I once thought I had numerous reasons to cry And I did, but I don’t anymore Because I am born, born, born At last I am born At last I am born It took me a long, long time But now I am born I once was a mess of guilt because of the flesh It’s remarkable what you can learn Once you are born, born, born Born, born, born Born, born, born Morrissey in bloom at last, he's born, he's born again! In Rome, the city that gave him a new life, that made him discover he could live without suffering and resentment. The sun, the people, the atmosphere, everything about Rome opens your heart and your spirit. It makes you wonder: where have I been so far? How much time have I lost elsewhere? Morrissey found love, sex, quietness and inner peace, the serenity of the contemplator, creative idleness, the "dolce vita" of Rome and of Romans. I know, my opinion is not objective, after all I am from Rome... but believe me, the real soul of Rome is this and it makes you feel like Morrissey does when you try and live there for a while. ...eccellente!...: excellent, first-rate. At the half of the track a boy shouts "eccellente!". Morrissey heard that shout one night when coming back from the recording studio. It sounded too good that he decided to record it and put it in one of his song. Claude Brasseur: Famous French actor, born in 1936. He acted in more than 80 movies and he still is active in 2006 ("Le Hèros de la famille"). Album: Ringleader Of The Tormentors Year: 2006 Music: Jesse Tobias Life Is A Pigsty It’s the same old S.O.S. But with brand new broken fortunes And once again I turn to you Once again I do I turn to you It’s the same old S.O.S. But with brand new broken fortunes I’m the same underneath But this you, you surely knew Life is a pigsty Life is a pigsty Life is a pigsty Life is a pigsty Life, life is a pigsty Life, life is a pigsty Life, life is a pigsty Life is a pigsty And if you don’t know this Then what do you know? Every second of my life I only live for you And you can shoot me And you can throw me off a train I still maintain I still maintain Life, life is a pigsty Life is a pigsty And I’d been shifting gears all of my life But I’m still the same underneath This you surely knew I can’t reach you I can’t reach you I can’t reach you anymore Can you please stop time? Can you stop the pain? I feel too cold And now I feel too warm again Can you stop this pain? Can you stop this pain? Even now in the final hour of my life I’m falling in love again Again Even now in the final hour of my life I’m falling in love again Again Again Again I’m falling in love again Again Again Again Album: Ringleader Of The Tormentors Year: 2006 Music: Alain Whyte How Soon Is Now? I am the son and the heir Of a shyness that is criminally vulgar I'm son and heir Of nothing in particular You, shut your mouth! How can you say I go about things the wrong way I am Human and I need to be Loved Just like everybody else does There's a club if you'd like to go You could meet somedody who really loves you So you go and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home and you cry And you want to die When you say it's gonna happen Now Well, when exactly do you mean See, I've already waited too long And all my hope is gone You, shut your mouth! How can you say I go about things the wrong way I am Human and I need to be Loved Just like everybody else does Undoubtably The Smiths' most famous song, How Soon Is Now? sees the rocky side of the group, with the unique sound of this song, and its long instrumental gaps inbetween unearthly vocal parts from Morrissey. What could have been a chart-topping single was pissed away by Morrissey and Marr, who then consequently moaned about its lack of chart success. The famous "swampy" guitar sound was sampled by Soho for their 1991 hit "Hippychick", which led to Morrissey and Marr claiming a 25% royalty on the song. The BBC version is very similar, which makes you wonder quite how Johnny Marr did it. Patrick Frawley explains the technique used: "There is a 'vibrato' or 'tremolo' twist knob on certain guitar amplifiers; some Fender models come to mind. It specifically produces that unmistakable wooga-wooga sound, originally intended to emulate a skilled stringed instrument player's fingered tremoloing (think concert violinists, cellists, etc.). It's basically an electrically-induced volume oscillation; one can hear the chord being played, bouncing back and forth on the volume scale, but Marr's good enough to mask the changes. Early guitar rock god Bo Diddley used it extensively on his Fifties singles, which have influenced generations of guitarists, including (obviously) Marr. The distinctive drumbeat of the track is also a blatant/loving Diddley nick". Vanessa Redgrave & David Hemmings are on the sleeve of the re-release of How Soon is now. The still photograph is taken from "Blow-up", a 1966 movie by Michelangelo Antonioni. Album: Hatful Of Hollow Year: Nov. 1984 Music: Johnny Marr Irish Blood, English Heart Irish blood, English heart This I'm made of There is no one on earth I'm afraid of And no regime can buy or sell me I've been dreaming of a time when To be English is not to be baneful, To be standing by the flag, not feeling shameful Racist or partial Irish blood, English heart This I'm made of There is no one on earth I'm afraid of And I will die with both of my hands untied I've been dreaming of a time when The English are sick to death of Labour and Tories, And spit upon the name Oliver Cromwell And denounce this Royal Line that still salute him And will salute him FOREVER The lyrics tell us a lot about how Morrissey intends politics, sense of freedom and being English in the world, how it was in history and in the nowadays. The recent past of the author (he lived in London, then he moved to Ireland and then to Los Angeles, USA) is a clear inspiration for these lyrics. He still hasn't found his own nation and his own flag to represent him and his sense of how life should be. Yet the English people should one day look to their history in a different way. Morrissey's blood is actually Irish, since his mother was born in Dublin, while his father is from Manchester, England. He grew in Manchester, England and he spent most of his life in England before taking a voluntary exile to Ireland first and then on to Los Angeles. Labour: the party of Labour opposed to the Tories, the right party in UK. Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), member of Parliament, soldier and statesman with strong moral behaviour. Oliver Cromwell rose from the middle ranks of English society to be Lord Protector of England, Scotland and Ireland, the only non-royal ever to hold that position. He played a leading role in bringing Charles I to trial and to execution, thus bringing to an end the absolute power of the English monarchy; he undertook the most complete and the most brutal military conquest ever undertaken by the English over their neighbours; he championed a degree of religious freedom otherwise unknown in England before the last one hundred years; but the experiment he led collapsed within two years of his death, and his corpse dangled from a gibbet at Tyburn. He was - and remains - one of the most contentious figures in world history. Performing on Janice Long Show and live during 2002 and 2003 Morrissey sings racial instead of partial which is the official version on the album "You are the quarry". Album: You Are The Quarry Year: 2004 Music: Alain Whyte Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before Stop me, oh stop me Stop me if you think that you've heard This one before Nothing's changed I still love you Oh I still love you Only slightly, only slightly less Than I used to, my love I was delayed, I was way-laid An emergency stop I smelt the last ten seconds of life I crashed down on the crossbar And the pain was enough To make a shy, bald buddhist reflect And plan a mass-murder Who said I'd lied to her? Oh who said I'd lied because I never, I never Who said I'd lied because I never I was detained, I was restrained He broke my spleen And broke my knee And then he really laid into me Friday night in Out-patients Who said I'd lied to her ? Oh who said I'd lied because I never, I never Who said I'd lied because I never And so I drank one And became fool And when I fell on the floor I drank more Stop me, oh stop me Stop me if you think that you've heard This one before Nothing's changed I still love you Oh I still love you Only slightly, only slightly less Than I used to, my love Album: Strangeways, Here We Come Year: 1987 Music: Johnny Marr |
