Kaleidoscopic
|
Kaleidoscopic is a visually captivating series that alters everyday space with unexpected layers of reality. Brussels-based artist Maria Baoli uses a basic, mirrored triangle to introduce fragments of a person into common areas like a tiled bathroom or a wall covered with ivy. By simply intervening with the otherwise boring spaces, she generates intriguing effects that viewers will inspect and analyze until they identify some sort of connection between the two separate ideas.
The contemplative work invites us to reconsider how we see our surrounding world and to think about how the simplest of things can hold many hidden complexities. In the mind of Baoli, the corner of a bedroom or the roof of a building have endless possibilities. Many of the artist's projects involve people, and, when speaking about her work in general, she explains, "There’s a certain beauty in the gestures that are almost invisible in our daily lives. With the opposition of movement and the calmness of the subject, there’s a feeling of both reality and fiction." |
