...editor of The Deleuze Reader, summarizes the general idea of their theory in this way: “Nomad arts...strive to put variables in a state of constant variation.”4. My definition of nomad art expands upon this concept and also incorporates Deleuze and Guattari’s concept of the rhizome, which coincides with their principle of multiplicity. In lieu of mapping linear structures, Deleuze and Guattari’s rhizome permits infinite varieties of connections and recombinations, based on a structure of constantly changing variables. The rhizome argues for a decentralized, anarchic approach that allows for a multiplicity of meaning. The nomad, in a state of flux, thus becomes a natural conduit for many of Deleuze and Guattari’s theories.... .... The principles of nomad-art acknowledge that art objects tend to fail in their duty todeliver an authentic or unique experience for the viewer, because mechanical reproduction demands suspicion of any such claims. Mike Kelley’s strategy to address this realization is to allow the material objects in his artwork to reference their own inadequacy in fulfilling human desire. Discarded stuffed toys and used afghan blankets become reminders of our fickle relationships with objects, invoking a sense of the uncanny. The approach used in Barbarella is quite different from Kelley’s. The film attempts to compensate for the shortcomings of modern material culture by proposing a hyperactive, futuristic alternative, which takes on a quality of campiness. Both strategies represent a distancing from the aesthetic object that points to its deficiencies with a spirit of humor and delight in the freedom that such detachment allows |
